St. Catharines, Ontario, is known for several things:
Niagara's Wine Country: Situated in the heart of Niagara's wine country, St. Catharines boasts numerous vineyards and wineries, making wine tours a popular activity among locals and tourists alike.
Lake Ontario: St. Catharines is situated along the sandy coastline of Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes of Ontario, a name they earned by how vastly large they are. This makes St. Catharines a popular destination for those who enjoy boating and recreational water sports as well as those who like to catch a tan in the summer time, Take the kids to Lakeside Park to ride the courousel that a local philantropist bequeathed to the residents of St. Catharines on the condition that ride fares never increase beyond $0.05. Park your freshwater yacht along the Port Dalhousie Harbour and enjoy a nice dinner at the Dalhousie Yacht Club. Take in some rays while you play beach volleyball or jetski at Sunset Beach. The city is also home to the Welland Canal, a key part of the St. Lawrence Seaway system, facilitating shipping and trade.
Education Hub: Niagara at large in an education-centric area with several Post-secondary Institutions like Niagara College and the Univeristy of Niagara Falls. St. Catharines is also home to many Private and Trade schools like Trillium College and Cappa Hair School, but more notably, it's the home of Brock Badgers and Brock University. Beginning around the last week of August, we see an influx of Students from all over the Globe settling in and around campus for the start of a new semester that is kicks off frosh week with the annual grape stomp trandition (you are in wine country after all).
Sports Enthusiasm: We like our sports here in St. Catharines. And I don't just mean that there's no shortage of Pubs to watch the game on, any night in every corner of town. We are real sports enthusiasts here. From the plethora of varying house league sports you sign the kids up for from the tender age of 4, to not-so-pro adult beer leagues, to the competitive travel leagues to the Semi-pro sports teams like the Juinor B Falcons, Niagara Ice Dogs and the Niagara River Lions, to the Olympic athletes competing at the Henley Regatta, Kickboxing, Swimming, you name it, we love it, we're here for it.
Cultural and Arts Scene: St. Catharines has a vibrant cultural and arts scene. The Meridian Centre is where you can catch sports games, concerts, performing arts performances, family shows, and other special events. A short distance down the road, The Performing Arts Centre is where you can catch theatre performances, family shows, 'the film house', performance dance, art exhibits, and yet more concerts. (Niagara is HUGE on live music performances, they're happening everywhere, all the time. Do we want to see your band play? Yes, yes we do. We even have all kinds of music festivals and our own local Awards Ceremonies. St. Catharines S.C.E.N.E. fest along with the help of our local radio station 97.7 htz fm Rock search has been the launch point of many successful bands you hear on the radio today.) Not to brag but we also have karaoke somewhere 7 nights a week too. We're an artsy bunch too. There's lots of local production theatres you can be a part of, art galleries to peruse. You can experience all the local restaurants and specialty food stores. We also have a TON of Festivals, Grape & Wine, Cicada Fest, Busker Fest, Rib Fest, Concert in the Park Series, Market Square, Niagara Folk Arts Festival, etc. There's lots to see and do.
Historical and Recreational Attractions: Speaking of things to see and do, we have a museum, along the Welland Canal, there's Morningstar Mill, lots of parks and trails throughout town, Short Hills, Rockway Conservation, Mary Malcomson Eco Park. St. Catharines is nicknamed "The Garden City" due to its lush greenery and parks. Cool fact (pun intended), because of where we are positioned in the Niagara Penninsiula along the Greenbelt and Escaprment, we get less snow than some of the surrounding areas but that doesn't mean it's warmer, thanks to the lake effect.
Friendliness: We're also pretty friendly around here.
These factors contribute to St. Catharines' unique character and make it a notable city in the Niagara region.
